So why is this happening? What’s going on in the German production scene at the moment? What is it about German movies that makes them so unique? And so distinctly German? Does it still hold true to say, „if it’s not gloomy, it can’t be a German movie“? Not necessarily, because it was a comedy, Toni Erdmann (admittedly one with an edge) that won 5 European Film Awards, was nominated for the Golden Globes, is the German entry to the Oscars and has even had its theatrical release in the US this December, which is a remarkable achievement for a German movie without a historical topic.
